Mayor's Message

This past month Cuba City has been notified that we did not receive the DNR grant for the playground equipment at Splinter Park.  We thought we had an excellent chance because we had excess points to qualify.  Normally less than 40 communities apply.  This year there were 90.  In the special council meeting on August 30, the council voted to do a portion of the project to keep the community moving forward.  The city is going out for bids for the proposed restroom and parking lot.  We hope to get donations or maybe use a capital project.

Cement was poured for Curb and Gutter for the city newly developed 8 lots.  They are listed with a realtor with a price of $30,000 for the smaller lots and $32,000 for the larger lots.  The Sunset Ridge Covenants will apply to these very nice lots.  Hopefully they will be sold.

The Water Department is in the process of a required in-house inspection of all water meters in the city.  The DNR is requiring a water lateral inspection of every house. The department will also be doing cross connection inspection and documenting which homes have a water softener.  The city will notify you when they need to enter your house.

Due to passing the PFAS (forever chemicals) study last year, the city received a waiver and will not have to test again.  The clarifier work at the wastewater treatment plant has been completed.  The Fire Department assisted in washing down the treatment pond to prepare it for seal coating.

The batting cages at Splinter Park being done by Todd and Caleb Timmerman are almost completed.  They fund raised and collected several thousands of dollars of donations to do this project which was their Eagle project for Boy Scouts.

Officer Bendickson did a presentation for the library summer program.   Officer Lovell and a Grant County Deputy arrested a person in Steve’s Pizza parking lot, resulting in the deputy being injured and missing several weeks of work.  Officer Lovell also assisted Grant County Emergency Response Team with the arrest of a high risk individual with the help of K9-Thor.

The Fire Department calls for the month of July included a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy 80 and St. Rose road, a two vehicle accident at Model Road and Center road, and a strange odor in a house caused by a hot power cord on a scanner.  Fire Chief Patterson reported that Southwest Health EMS average response time to calls in Cuba City was 6-8 minutes.

The Cuba City Chamber of Commerce is planning a Septemberfest Curds & Brats Festival on September 30 from 3-11pm at Splinter Park featuring food vendors, beer tent, live bands, kids games, inflatables and fireworks.  See the insert in your September Utility statement for further information.

On October 29, the City of President Committee will host a Hall of Fame Banquet at Banfield’s. It will honor present and past citizens of Cuba City who have “given back” to the community.  The banquet is open to the public with doors opening at 12:00 noon at the cost of $25 per person.   Contact Joan Petitqoue (608-778-2524) for reservations.
